Gemini CLI Brings AI Coding and Automation Tools to the Developer Terminal
Google launches Gemini CLI, an open-source AI agent that brings powerful coding and task automation features directly to developers’ command line interface.

Gemini has launched Gemini CLI, an open-source AI agent designed to integrate directly into developers' command line interface (CLI).

This new tool aims to provide a seamless and efficient connection to Gemini’s powerful AI models, enhancing developers' workflow. Gemini CLI supports a range of tasks including coding, problem-solving, content generation, and task management, offering a lightweight yet versatile utility that works directly within the terminal.

Free Access with High Usage Limits

Developers can access Gemini CLI for free by logging in with a personal Google account. This gives them a Gemini Code Assist license that includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, a model with a 1 million token context window.

In addition, Gemini CLI offers 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day at no charge. For those requiring more advanced features, paid plans are available through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, with options for professional users to run multiple agents simultaneously.

The tool is also integrated with Gemini Code Assist, which is available across all plans, enabling developers to use AI-driven prompts for coding in both VS Code and Gemini CLI. This integration is designed to streamline coding processes and enhance productivity.

Powerful Capabilities for Developers

Gemini CLI equips developers with AI tools for code understanding, task automation, and real-time context via Google Search. It also supports custom workflows through prompts and extensions like MCP.

Gemini CLI is fully open-source under the Apache 2.0 license, encouraging contributions from the developer community. The tool is designed to be extensible, with support for customization and system prompts, allowing developers to adjust the tool to their personal or team-specific needs.

This open-source approach invites developers to contribute by reporting issues, suggesting features, or submitting code improvements.

Integration with Gemini Code Assist for IDEs

In addition to terminal use, Gemini CLI shares its underlying technology with Gemini Code Assist, a tool designed for use within IDEs like VS Code. Gemini Code Assist helps developers by writing tests, fixing errors, and building features using AI-driven multi-step plans.

The integration of Gemini CLI and Code Assist ensures that developers can leverage the same AI capabilities in both terminal and IDE environments.
