AI Traps Offer Real-Time Defense Against Pest, Reviving Hopes for Punjab’s Cotton Farmers

In a move to support the idea of sustainable agriculture, AI powered pheromone trapes are being used by the cotton farmers of Punjab. As reported by Hindustan Times, the traps are being developed to fight pink bollworm (PBW) infestations. The traps are developed by the Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR). The small traps provide real-time monitoring and alerts to reduce pesticide usage.
AI-Powered Monitoring for Timely Intervention
The traps are equipped with cameras that capture images of PBW moths attracted to the pheromone lure. The images are analyzed using algorithms supported by machine learning and are provided to farmers via mobile phones, with hourly updates on pest activity. The data helps reduce the need for excessive pesticide use and keep pest damage at a low level.

Pilot Project and Expansion Plans
The AI traps were deployed across 18 villages during the 2024-2025 Kharif season and in the growing districts of Mansa, Bhatinda, and Sri Muktsar Sahib. The success of the trial version/pilot project has helped expand the technology to other regions as well, in the seasons yet to come.

As the AI traps have been adopted, pesticide applications have reduced a lot. This reduction has helped in savings for farmers and also helped reduce the environmental impact. Farmers are supporting the system as the system has helped improve cotton yields and quantity as well.

The AI traps provide real-time data and expert advisories, allowing farmers to better protect their crops efficiently and sustainably.
