Alliance for Healthcare from the Eye (AHE) Launches: Pioneering Use of Ocular Data and AI to Revolutionize Early Disease Detection and Preventive Care

The Alliance for Healthcare from the Eye (AHE), was officially launched at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting in Salt Lake City.

The partnership, a collaboration of health leaders, industry innovators, non-profits, policymakers, and payors, is committed to using ocular data, the information from the eye to transform healthcare through artificial intelligence (AI) and oculomics, a new science devoted to the study of the eye as a portal to both ocular and systemic health.

This cross-disciplinary initiative sees the transition of healthcare from reactive to proactive through the use of the eye's potential to provide a non-invasive, high-resolution window into the body's vascular, neurologic, and metabolic systems.

Through the use of AI-based analysis of eye data, such as retinal photographs and vision function tests, the partnership seeks to detect subtle indicators of systemic conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and neurodegeneration before symptoms become apparent.

Dr. Robert N. Weinreb, a founding member of the Alliance and a world-renowned ophthalmologist, said, “The eye offers a non-invasive, high-resolution window into the body’s vascular, neurologic, and metabolic systems. With advanced ophthalmic diagnostics, AI can help identify early indicators of heart disease, kidney dysfunction, neurodegeneration and other systemic diseases—before symptoms arise.”

Transforming Healthcare with Ocular Data and AI

The AHE aims to integrate AI-powered ocular analysis into existing healthcare workflows, particularly within eyecare, primary care, and specialty care settings.

By embedding Healthcare from the Eye into care networks, the alliance plans to improve early detection of high-risk individuals, enhance access to care, and shift the focus toward preventive services. This approach will not only optimize care but also reduce the burden of late-stage diseases and healthcare costs.

The foundational principles and vision of this innovative healthcare model were outlined in a JAMA Ophthalmologymanuscript co-authored by several AHE members, published on May 8, 2025.

The paper highlights how AI-powered ocular pre-screening can enable earlier detection, improve access to care, and reduce healthcare costs by identifying health risks before they manifest in full-blown disease.

The Future of Healthcare with AHE

As the alliance continues, its objectives are well-defined: increase access to care, enhance care coordination, and make this innovative model scalable and sustainable.

Through the application of ocular data and artificial intelligence to facilitate early detection and preventive care, the AHE will be a model of cross-sector collaboration that will define the future of healthcare for patients, providers, and communities globally.
