Amazon to Invest $20 Billion in Pennsylvania for AI and Cloud Infrastructure Expansion

Amazon has announced a transformative $20 billion investment in Pennsylvania, marking the largest private sector investment in the state’s history.
The initiative will significantly expand Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center infrastructure to power AI and cloud computing technologies. Initial development will begin in Salem Township (Luzerne County) and Falls Township (Bucks County), with additional sites under consideration across the Commonwealth.
The landmark investment will create at least 1,250 high-skilled jobs, from data center engineers to network specialists, while supporting thousands of additional jobs across construction, supply chains, and local communities.
Governor Josh Shapiro, said, “Pennsylvania is competing again—and I'm proud to announce that with Amazon's commitment of at least $20 billion to build new state-of-the-art data center campuses across our Commonwealth, we have secured the largest private sector investment in the history of Pennsylvania.”
Powering America’s AI Future
Amazon’s expansion reflects its broader strategy to position the U.S. as a global leader in AI and cloud technology, meeting the growing demands of industries seeking AI-driven transformation. With millions of AWS customers ranging from startups to government agencies, the investment will build the technology backbone for generative and agentic AIacross sectors.

Workforce Development and STEM Training
Additionally, Amazon is launching workforce programs in Pennsylvania to prepare residents for tech careers, including cloud training (CWA), fiber optic and data center technician courses, fusion splicing workshops, and a paid pre-apprenticeship (I2PA) for AWS roles. K–12 students will also benefit from STEM initiatives like We Build It Better and Think Big Experiences, which offer hands-on learning and career exploration.
Amazon is investing in Pennsylvania communities with a $250,000 grant fund for local initiatives and building on past support for housing, food, and tech education. Its Greencastle hub advances sustainability by recycling AWS hardware and supporting clean energy projects statewide.
A Growing Tech Footprint in Pennsylvania
This announcement expands Amazon’s operations beyond its existing 23 fulfillment and sortation centers and 20 delivery stations across Pennsylvania.
Since 2010, Amazon has invested over $26 billion in the Commonwealth, contributing to over 27,000 direct jobs and $26 billion in GDP impact.
Amazon is also actively supporting higher education, including its partnership with the University of Pittsburgh to establish a Health Sciences and Sports Analytics Cloud Innovation Center.
Through programs like Amazon Future Engineer, the company is funding scholarships and internships for Pennsylvania high school students pursuing degrees in computer science.
