BluWave-ai and Evolugen Partner to Automate Grid-Scale Battery Operations Using AI

BluWave-ai, a premier AI-based energy optimization firm, and Evolugen, a Brookfield Renewable subsidiary, have made a groundbreaking partnership to maximize the efficiency of grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Ontario.
The project will utilize BluWave-ai's advanced Energy Storage Autopilot™ to automate operations, providing real-time, AI-based decision-making for battery storage management and optimizing energy storage capacity for the grid.
AI-Powered Energy Optimization for Ontario's Growing Grid
The project, which is focused on resource optimization of Evolugen's 400 MW Ottawa battery storage system, will utilize AI and machine learning to incorporate major grid drivers such as carbon intensity, demand forecasting, and weather extremes in the operation of the BESS.
As AI and data-driven technologies are developing rapidly, the partnership will offer a clean solution for Ontario's changing grid requirements.
The Energy Storage Autopilot™, a grid-aware technology, will automate the submission of energy bids based on real-time data, ensuring the most efficient energy delivery while maximizing revenue and minimizing operational costs.
BluWave-ai’s AI-driven platform continuously analyzes market conditions and forecasts energy prices, allowing BESS operators to actively participate in wholesale energy markets, a key component of optimizing grid operations.

Enhancing Efficiency and Reliability in the Face of Demand Growth
Geoff Wright, Senior Vice President of Development at Evolugen. Said, “These projects are a major investment in power supply and reliability for rural Ottawa and all of Eastern Ontario.”
He added, “We are proud to partner with a local Ottawa company to ensure that we can maximize efficiency of existing infrastructure and deliver the high quality of power that all residents deserve."
The project comes at a critical time as the IESO (Independent Electricity System Operator) market renewal program is set to take effect on May 1, 2025, introducing dynamic price fluctuations that require agile, data-driven management.
The Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP) model, similar to California's approach, will create significant opportunities for grid-scale battery systems to help balance fluctuations and energy storage in real-time.
With over 400,000 EVs expected on Ontario’s grid within five years, BluWave-ai’s AI solutions are key to managing 16 GWh of daily battery storage and 6 GWh of EV load, helping address peak demand challenges, especially during overnight charging.
Strategic Collaboration for a Greener Future
A new AI-powered energy project in Ottawa supports Ontario’s plan to procure 3,000 MW of energy storage amid a projected 75% rise in electricity demand by 2050. Led by Canadian firm BluWave-ai and based in Kanata North Technology Park, one of Canada’s largest AI hubs, the project leverages local expertise to advance AI-driven clean energy solutions.
A new AI-powered energy project in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario is expected to create thousands of jobs and boost the local economy, while supporting Canada’s decarbonization goals by helping reduce carbon emissions and advance renewable energy systems.
