Canada Appoints First Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation
Evan Solomon becomes Canada’s first Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, signaling a bold step toward national AI governance and innovation.

In a landmark decision, Canada has appointed its first-ever Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon. A former journalist and media executive, Solomon will lead the country's AI strategy under Prime Minister Mark Carney. This new portfolio signals Canada’s ambition to establish itself as a global leader in the development, governance, and ethical use of AI technologies.

Why This Appointment Matters

Previously, AI oversight in Canada fell under the broader industry portfolio, often diluting the focus on emerging technologies. The creation of a dedicated AI ministry reflects growing recognition of AI's sweeping influence on economic growth, healthcare, national security, education, and public services.

Industry experts have welcomed the move. Rob Goehring, CEO of the AI Network of B.C. (AInBC), said, in an interview with Business Intelligence for BC, that the appointment signaled to the world that the government was taking artificial intelligence seriously.

Evan Solomon’s Role and Mandate

As Minister of AI and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon will be responsible for:

  • Developing national AI policy and legislation
  • Ensuring ethical standards and safety in AI systems
  • Promoting innovation and AI adoption in key sectors
  • Collaborating with international partners on AI governance

His appointment also underscores a broader trend among governments worldwide to formalize leadership roles in technology regulation, especially amid rising concerns around data privacy, misinformation, job displacement, and AI safety.
