Context.ai Joins OpenAI to Advance Model Evaluation Tools
Context.ai joins OpenAI in a bid to improve AI model transparency and performance evaluation tools.

Context.ai, a startup known for building evaluation and analytics tools for AI models, announced that its co-founders have joined OpenAI following an acqui-hire, as reported by TechCrunch. As part of the transition, Context.ai will be winding down its products, according to a message posted on the company’s website.

Founded in 2023 by ex-Google engineers Henry Scott-Green (CEO) and Alex Gamble (CTO), Context.ai announced that it will be shutting down its products following the transition of its founding team to OpenAI. While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, OpenAI confirmed the team’s onboarding but declined further comment.

“Evals are a requirement to building high-performing AI applications, but they’re hard to get right today,” Context.ai shared in a farewell note on its website. “We spent two years building evals and analytics for [models] at Context.ai, with a few pivots along the way. We couldn’t be more excited for this next chapter of our journey at OpenAI and are grateful to everyone who played a part.”

A Tool for Peering Inside the AI Black Box

Context.ai’s mission was to help AI developers gain transparency into their models. One of its key offerings was a dashboard for analyzing model output, allowing users to group and tag responses, identify gaps, and improve performance based on real user interactions.

The platform addressed a common challenge in AI development, the “black box” problem, where developers often struggle to understand how and why models behave a certain way.

According to TechCrunch, the startup had raised $3.5 million in seed funding in 2023 from GV (Google Ventures) and Theory Ventures and employed around six people as of August 2023. It remains unclear whether the full team will join OpenAI.

As OpenAI expands the deployment of its models across industries and applications, the acqui-hire is a clear signal that model transparency and performance evaluation are becoming a strategic priority for the company.
