CoreWeave and MERLIN Edged Launch NVIDIA-Powered AI Supercomputer in Barcelona, Positioning Catalonia as a Southern European AI Hub

CoreWeave Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with MERLIN Edged to host one of the first large-scale NVIDIA Hopper training and inference supercomputers in Spain. The new ultra-efficient data center, located in Barcelona, was officially inaugurated on May 13th by Barcelona’s Mayor, Jaume Collboni, alongside Albert Tort, Secretary of Telecommunications and Digital Transformation of the Government of Generalitat de Catalunya.

This 15MW data center will house 10,224 NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs, offering cutting-edge performance for AI workloads and a scalable infrastructure that meets the demands of next-generation AI applications.

The supercomputer, equipped with InfiniBand connectivity, will be pivotal in advancing AI research and development in southern Europe. Plans to further expand the capacity of this supercomputer include the addition of a Blackwell supercomputer in 2026.

The partnership aligns with CoreWeave's vision for European expansion. In 2024, the company announced an initial investment of $2.2 billion to increase AI cloud and high-compute capacity across Europe, powered entirely by 100% renewable energy.

Strategic Collaboration to Boost Europe’s AI Capabilities

MERLIN Properties, a leading real estate and infrastructure company in Spain and Portugal, and Edged Energy, a global technology developer for sustainable data centers, have been instrumental in the development of this project.

MERLIN Edged is known for its groundbreaking efforts in sustainability, operating data centers that use zero water and boast extremely high efficiency in converting electrical power into computing capacity.

With a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15, significantly lower than the European and global averages, these data centers are designed to minimize their carbon footprint while meeting the surging demands of AI and high-performance computing (HPC).

The CoreWeave-MERLIN Edged collaboration is expected to expand computing capacity across southern Europe, making the region a key hub for AI innovation and technological advancement.

Catalonia’s Emergence as a Leading AI Hub

Barcelona’s Mayor, Jaume Collboni, said, “This asset represents the realization of a shared vision: to transform Barcelona into a true digital port in the Mediterranean, and into an international benchmark for the digital economy and technological innovation.”

He added, “A forward-looking infrastructure, built to address the technological challenges of the future as they arise. The Barcelona Town Hall remains committed to foster a supportive environment for these types of initiatives"

A Global Gateway for AI Innovation

MERLIN Edged’s Barcelona data center, connected to the Barcelona Cable Landing Station, offers high-speed global connectivity, positioning the city as a key AI computing hub. With existing centers in Madrid and Bilbao and new projects planned across the Iberian Peninsula, MERLIN Edged is building a critical network for powering AI innovation in the region.
