DPD Deploys AI 'Locker on Wheels' Ottobots for Parcel Delivery
DPD's AI-powered Ottobot, a 'locker on wheels' delivery robot, navigating a pedestrian area in Milton Keynes.

As reported by Van Fleet World, Ottobot, an autonomous delivery solution, has been introduced by DPD UK for better last-mile parcel delivery. The robot is described as a multi-compartment one and is regarded as an advancement for DPD to integrate AI robotics into its operations.

Key Features of the Ottobot

  • Multi-Compartment Design: The Ottobot comes equipped with eight different compartments, allowing it to carry multiple parcels altogether, including items that are large and up to 38 liters in size.
  • Advanced Navigation: Ottobot uses a combination of LiDAR sensors, cameras, and sophisticated software. It easily navigates complex environments and also ensures safe and efficient delivery routes.
  • Extended Battery Life: The Ottobot features a battery life of up to six hours. It can complete multiple deliveries before returning to the depot for charging.
  • Secure Delivery System: To provide a secure delivery system, customers receive a one-time PIN via SMS, which helps them access the parcel and enhances both security and customer satisfaction.

Deployment and Expansion Plans

Milton Keynes has become the first place to be provided with the first Ottobot. The robot operates within a traffic-free network and accesses nearby residential areas. The initiative followed the successful trials of small robots in 2022. The primary objective is to implement robotic deliveries across the UK, with plans to expand to additional cities and towns.

Impact on Sustainability and Efficiency

With the introduction of a new model such as Ottobot, DPD aims to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the overall efficiency of delivery. With the use of electric power robots, sustainability goals can be achieved, and multiple parcels can be delivered in a single trip.
