Gartner Predicts 40% of Agentic AI Projects Will Be Scrapped by 2027

A recent report by Gartner reveals that more than 40% of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) projects will be cancelled by 2027 due to escalating costs and unclear business value. This highlights the challenges that many organizations face as they invest heavily in AI systems capable of autonomously completing tasks and achieving their goals.
The Rising Challenges and "Agent Washing"
Many tech giants, such as Salesforce and Oracle, have invested billions into AI agents, hoping to boost efficiency and reduce costs. However, Gartner notes that a significant number of these projects are still in their early stages and are often driven by hype. The report also highlights that "agent washing" is becoming increasingly prevalent, where products such as AI assistants and chatbots are marketed under the guise of agentic AI without possessing genuine agent capabilities. Gartner estimates that out of the thousands of agentic AI vendors, only around 130 are genuine.

Agentic AI’s Future and Its Role in Business
Gartner predicts that by 2028, at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through agentic AI, a significant increase from zero in 2024. Furthermore, the company forecasts that 33% of enterprise software applications will incorporate agentic AI by 2028, a dramatic rise from less than 1% in 2024. Despite these predictions, Gartner emphasizes that the maturity of current agentic AI models is limited, and they often fail to autonomously achieve complex business goals or follow nuanced instructions over time, which contributes to the high cancellation rate of these projects.
