Google has released Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview, an upgraded version of its flagship AI model, just ahead of its annual I/O developer conference. Available through the Gemini API, Vertex AI, AI Studio, and the Gemini chatbot app, the new version is offered at the same price as the existing Gemini 2.5 Pro model.

The I/O edition introduces enhancements specifically for developers, including improved performance in coding tasks, code transformation, and function calling. Google claims that it has incorporated feedback from current users to reduce errors and improve the model’s reliability in developer workflows.

Benchmark Gains and WebDev Focus

According to Google, Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) leads the WebDev Arena Leaderboard, a benchmark for building visually appealing and functional web apps. The model also scored 84.8% on VideoMME, indicating strong capabilities in video understanding.

The model is designed to handle interactive and aesthetic web development more effectively, while still offering steerability for specific use cases.

Competitive Timing Ahead of Major AI Releases

The release positions Google to stay competitive as rivals like OpenAI and xAI prepare to launch next-generation models. With this I/O edition, Google is aiming to capture developer mindshare by demonstrating practical improvements in coding and software-building tasks. More announcements are expected during the upcoming I/O conference, where Google is likely to showcase additional tools and AI advancements.
