Google Launches Safety Charter to Fight Online Fraud in India
Google announces its Safety Charter at the Safer with Google India Summit, aiming to strengthen cybersecurity and prevent online fraud with AI-driven tools.

Google has launched its Safety Charter at the "Safer with Google India Summit" in New Delhi, outlining a comprehensive strategy to enhance cybersecurity and fight online fraud in India. The initiative highlights Google’s commitment to fostering a safer digital ecosystem in the country as it undergoes rapid digital transformation. The Safety Charter is designed to protect users from online threats, strengthen cybersecurity for enterprises and government organizations, and ensure responsible AI development.

Three Pillars of Google’s Safety Charter

The Safety Charter is built on three key pillars: protecting users from online fraud, enhancing cybersecurity measures for businesses and government entities, and promoting responsible AI integration into platform design. Google’s ongoing efforts include the Digikavach initiative, which has already delivered AI-driven protection to over 177 million users. Google Pay has played a significant role in preventing fraud, issuing 4.1 crore scam alerts and helping avoid ₹13,000 crore in fraudulent transactions in 2024 alone. Additionally, Google Play Protect blocked nearly 6 crore high-risk app installation attempts, while Gmail and Google Messages continue to block millions of scam emails and texts each month.

Google's Expanding Cybersecurity Investments

Google’s initiative also includes a $20 million commitment through Google.org to The Asia Foundation to establish over 10 cyberclinics across the Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, collaborations with IIT-Madras on Post-Quantum Cryptography and partnerships with Indian universities to train MSMEs and students highlight Google’s efforts to build a skills-ready digital workforce in India. Heather Adkins, VP of Engineering at Google Security, emphasized that AI is transforming how security measures are implemented, making it possible to identify vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them.

Google’s Safety Charter serves as a blueprint for AI-driven innovation where security, trust, and scalability are integrated into India’s digital growth.
