IGNOU to Leverage IIT Bombay’s AI Project for Multilingual Education
IGNOU collaborates with IIT Bombay’s AI-driven Project Udaan to deliver higher education content in multiple Indian languages, advancing inclusive learning.

According to reports that have been published by MSN News and other sources, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have formed a partnership to use IIT Bombay’s AI tools for delivering education in various Indian languages for the students who are better with their native languages . The collaboration marks a significant shift in the Indian education system, as it can enhance accessibility and inclusivity in higher education.

Project Udaan: Bridging Language Barriers

The tie-up is said to utilize IIT Bombay’s project, Udaan, an AI-based software that facilitates the translation of academic content into various languages. The project uses machine translation techniques and is supplemented by human post-editing, ensuring both accuracy and pragmatic relevance in the educational materials produced for the country. The project has already been reported to have translated several textbooks and educational materials, making them accessible to an audience who may not understand English as an academic language.

IGNOU’s Role and Vision

IGNOU is known for its distance learning programs and is a leading university in promoting education in different regional languages. The university had last collaborated with the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and translated its MBA course into 12 Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali. The integration of Project Udaan can help further the mission by providing quality education to students and youths in their preferred native language.

Enhancing Educational Accessibility

The initiative goes well with the National Education policy, which gives an emphasis to promoting multilingual education. The courses are provided in the regional languages, and it will help to bridge the gap between students who don’t understand English well and the ones who speak English as a professional language, it also supports the government’s initiative to provide an inclusive and professional education to the students.
