IIT Ropar Receives ₹311 Crore Grant for AI-Powered Agricultural Solutions

IIT Ropar has been awarded a Rs 311 crore entitlement from the Union Ministry of Education to establish a Centre of Excellence focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions for the agriculture sector. This initiative aims to bring slice-edge AI technologies to pastoral growers, enhancing ranch operations and promoting sustainable husbandry practices.
AI inventions for Sustainable husbandry
Professor Rajiv Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, emphasized the design’s focus on empowering growers by using AI to enhance agrarian productivity. The institute has previously developed several AI-grounded tools, including the Digital Bee Sense technology, which utilizes AI to monitor bee health and enhance pollination, ultimately improving crop yield. Other inventions include AI results for beast operation, similar to a smart label that monitors beast health and cautions growers via mobile phones, and precision husbandry tools to optimize nitrogen situations in the soil.

The design also includes the development of AI-driven crop yield prediction models that combine satellite data, soil information, and meteorological data to provide accurate quarter-to-quarter predictions. Additionally, IIT Ropar is developing an AI-powered crop bracket system to assist growers in allocating resources more efficiently. These data-driven results aim to help 50,000 growers optimize their agrarian practices and achieve food security and sustainability across India.
This action marks a significant step towards integrating AI and technology into Indian husbandry, helping address challenges related to food security, resource operation, and sustainable agrarian practices.
