Lloyd’s Register Teams Up with Microsoft to Use AI for Advancing Maritime Nuclear Technology

Lloyd's Register (LR) has announced that it is collaborating with Microsoft to leverage the capabilities of generative AI to develop nuclear technology for maritime use. The collaboration will utilize AI to enhance the regulation process for nuclear technology in the maritime industry. This will increase the use of nuclear energy solutions for ships and offshore platforms.
Unlocking Potential for Maritime Nuclear Applications
The Azure OpenAI Service from the technology giant will drive generative AI and facilitate the connection between land-based and maritime uses. The AI can evaluate past nuclear licensing information. This enables licensing engineers to create new permitting documents more quickly and effectively. The technology will enhance the ability to find regulations, precedents, and important information hidden within extensive regulatory datasets.
Lloyd's Register plans to utilize this technology in enhancing the regulation process for nuclear power utilized in offshore platforms and vessels. The action is considered a major milestone towards nuclear energy becoming a cleaner and greener source of power.
The new AI powered system will offer a quicker, more cost-effective way through nuclear regulations. By speeding up the regulatory process, the technology aims to make nuclear energy a more viable clean energy solution.
A Strategic Collaboration
This partnership combines two fields of expertise. It brings together Microsoft's cutting-edge AI capabilities and Lloyd's Register's long experience of maritime and nuclear safety.
Darryl Willis, Microsoft CVP of Energy & Resources Industry, added, “By combining our AI expertise with Lloyd’s Register's expertise in maritime and nuclear safety, we are paving the way to ease regulatory barriers and make sustainability more attainable for all industries."
By employing generative AI to simplify and accelerate nuclear regulation, the partnership paves the way for a sustainable future.
