Maharashtra Approves MahaAgri-AI Policy for Smart Farming
Maharashtra's MahaAgri-AI Policy aims to digitally transform agriculture using AI, IoT, and drones with Rs 500 crore allocated over three years.

The Maharashtra state Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the groundbreaking MahaAgri-AI Policy for 2025-2029, aiming to place the state's agriculture sector at the forefront of digital transformation. The policy seeks to integrate cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Generative AI, Internet of Things (IoT), drones, robotics, and predictive analytics into the agricultural landscape. This initiative will support several ongoing projects, such as Agristack, Maha-Agristack, Mahavedh, CropSap, Agmarknet, and the Digital Farming School, aligning with the government's vision of sustainable and scalable solutions.

Key Features of the MahaAgri-AI Policy

The policy outlines a three-tier administrative structure for implementation, supported by a funding allocation of Rs 500 crore over the next three years. In response to the rapidly evolving AI sector, the Cabinet has also approved periodic updates to the policy over the next five years. Key institutions involved in the policy's rollout will include the State Level Steering Committee, the State Level Technical Committee, and the Agricultural AI Research and Innovation Centre at the Agricultural University. These bodies will oversee various initiatives such as the establishment of AI and Agritech Innovation Centres.

Empowering Farmers and Startups through AI Innovation

The policy is designed to foster a thriving AI ecosystem in agriculture by encouraging collaborations among startups, technology firms, research institutions, and farmers. A central focus will be on developing "farmer-centric" AI applications, facilitating data sharing, and supporting the growth of agricultural tech startups. Additionally, four Agricultural Universities in Maharashtra will host Agri-AI Innovation and Incubation Centres, guided by premier institutions like IITs and IISc. These centres will support data-driven agriculture and AI solutions, promoting secure, consent-based data exchange across the state, paving the way for more efficient, sustainable agricultural practices.
