Malaysia's AI-Powered AWAS Speed Camera Trial Faces Launch Delay

No Confirmed Date for Trial Launch
According to reports from certain Malaysian news outlets, the introduction of AI-powered AWAS (Automated Awareness Safety System) has been postponed. The announcements were made, and it was said that the launch will occur in June 2025. The Ministry of Transport has yet to confirm the launch date, and no post or announcement has been issued on the testing runs.
The initial plans of the rollout were on major expressways, which included the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway and segments of the North-South Expressway. The new cameras are set to be installed, but the testing is not said to have begun.

Smarter Enforcement with AI Technology
The updated AWAS system begins the preparations for point-to-point speed enforcement, which means the cameras determine the vehicle's average speed rather than catching it in a single place. The approach is effective since it ensures that drivers maintain a moderate speed and do not slow down near the camera.
The Ekin Spotter cameras, coupled with powerful AI and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology, detect high and accurate speeds. The cameras are reported to identify vehicles traveling at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour, making them among the best of their kind.
Next Steps and Ministry Statement
The Ministry of Transport has informed the public that point-to-point cameras will be deployed in high-risk areas such as the Menora Tunnel and the Sungai Perak stretch once the trial results have been validated.
Nonetheless, the authorities have warned motorists and drivers to practice safe driving habits, since the system is expected to be activated as soon as final choices are made.
