Meta Offers $100M Bonuses to Lure OpenAI Talent: Altman
Meta reportedly offered OpenAI engineers up to $100 million to join its AI team, as the competition for top AI talent intensifies.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman disclosed that Facebook parent company Meta has tried to poach OpenAI staff with signing bonuses worth as much as $100 million. This is part of Meta's larger efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, particularly in the wake of high-stakes competition for AI talent. Altman discussed this on the Uncapped podcast, citing the high levels of competition in the AI sector.

Meta's AI Talent Acquisition Strategy

Meta's pushy recruitment strategy for AI engineers is coming as the company seeks to play catch-up with its rivals, such as OpenAI, Google, and China's DeepSeek, in the AI race. Meta has extended significant offers to lure premier engineers away from OpenAI, including multi-million dollar signing bonuses and yearly compensation packages that vastly outstrip industry standards, said Altman. Even though the large financial rewards are on the table, no premier talent from OpenAI has yet accepted the Meta offers, according to Altman.

Competition Ramps Up in the AI Industry

The race for AI professionals has reached fever pitch as top technology firms vie to attract the best brains in the business. The war for engineers has become as intense as professional sport, with firms offering spectacular compensation packages to retain top talent. Meta's efforts to attract best talent are part of a wider endeavor to establish a superintelligence team in order to restore its competitive advantage in AI. Meta also recently invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and brought on Alexandr Wang, its CEO, to head its new AI unit.

These advancements emphasize the fast-changing nature of the AI world and the increasing importance of bringing in the right minds to steer the future of the technology.
