Microsoft Advances Eco-Conscious AI with New Renewable Energy Partnerships

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the technological landscape, Microsoft is pushing forward with efforts to ensure its AI-driven future remains environmentally responsible as reported by MSN.
In February, EDP Renewables North America, a major renewable energy provider, announced the delivery of three solar projects and the signing of a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Microsoft.
Two of these solar initiatives are located in Illinois, with the third based in Texas. According to Reuters, the projects will collectively produce around 400 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, with Microsoft committed to purchasing approximately 389 MW along with the associated renewable energy credits through the VPPA arrangement.
Addressing the Environmental Costs of AI Growth
Although AI is highly embedded in daily digital activities, its explosive growth puts ever-growing demands on worldwide energy resources. Most of today's AI processing uses fossil fuel-powered data centers, largely natural gas, which makes a huge contribution to carbon emissions and global warming.
Their impact on the environment is two-sided, these electricity-guzzling plants not just increasing air contamination, aggravating public health complications such as respiratory diseases and asthma but also devouring huge amounts of water in cooling, draining precious natural resources.
