Nvidia CEO Discusses Huawei's AI Capabilities with US Lawmakers

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang discussed concerns regarding Huawei Technologies Co.'s growing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in a closed-door meeting with US lawmakers, as reported by Reuters.
The US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee meeting addressed concerns over Huawei's AI chips and how limiting Nvidia's chips in China would increase the competitiveness of Huawei's products.
Based on a senior staff source from Congress, one of the key talking points was that Huawei chips potentially could take over the world in AI if models such as the Chinese model DeepSeek R1 were trained with Huawei chips.
Nvidia's Statement on Meeting with US Lawmakers
In response to the discussion, Nvidia spokesperson John Rizzo confirmed that Jensen Huang met with the House Foreign Affairs Committee to highlight the strategic importance of AI as critical national infrastructure. Rizzo added that Huang reaffirmed Nvidia's support for the US government’s efforts to promote American technology and interests globally.

US Export Controls and Nvidia’s Response
According to Reuters, since the first administration of President Donald Trump, Nvidia’s chips, which are integral to AI systems like chatbots and image generators, have been subject to US export controls. To comply with these regulations, Nvidia has adapted by designing chips specifically tailored for the Chinese market.
However, last month, Nvidia revealed that it had been asked by the Trump administration to stop selling its most recent China-specific chip, the H20. This decision was influenced by rising Chinese orders for AI models like those from DeepSeek, which lower-cost AI models powered.
As Nvidia faces restrictions in China, Huawei has moved to capitalize on the situation by preparing for mass shipments of a new AI chip aimed at competing directly with Nvidia's offerings as per Reuters.
