OpenAI and Meta in Talks with Reliance Industries to Expand AI Presence in India

According to a report by The Information, OpenAI and Meta Platforms are in talks with India’s Reliance Industries about potential partnerships to expand their AI offerings.
The report suggests that these discussions could lead to a collaboration with Reliance’s Jio. This might help expand OpenAI’s footprint in India through the distribution of ChatGPT.
OpenAI's Plans with Reliance Jio
Reliance Jio, part of Reliance Industries, might become a key distributor for OpenAI’s popular language model, ChatGPT. The partnership might help OpenAI expand its reach in India. OpenAI is actively working on establishing its spot in India – one of the largest tech markets in the world.
As part of their goal to enter the Indian market, ChatGPT also has discussed to reduce the subscription price for ChatGPT to make it more affordable for users in India. Recently, Netflix had also taken this approach to grow its footprint in the Indian market.
Meta’s Involvement and Data Center Plans
On the other hand, Meta Platforms has also been in talks with Reliance Industries to India. The discussions, according to the report, revolve around running Meta and Open AI’s AI models in a massive data center. The infrastructure, i.e., the data center, will be constructed by Reliance Industries.
The planned data centre will be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. And it is anticipated to be the largest of its kind – a 3 GW capacity. The goal is to host and run OpenAI's models locally, ensuring that data from Indian customers stays within the country.
