OpenAI to Acquire AI-Assisted Coding Tool Windsurf for $3 Billion
OpenAI has agreed to purchase the artificial intelligence-assisted coding tool Windsurf for approximately $3 billion, according to Bloomberg News. The acquisition, still pending closure, is expected to bolster OpenAI’s ChatGPT coding capabilities and expand its offerings in AI-driven software development.
Windsurf's Growth and Investor Support
Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, had recently been valued at $3 billion following talks with investors like General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins, as reported by Bloomberg.
The company raised significant funds in recent years, including a $150 million funding round in August, which propelled its valuation to $1.25 billion. Other investors in Windsurf include Greenoaks.
OpenAI's Strategic Acquisition
This acquisition would mark OpenAI's largest purchase to date and complements its ongoing efforts to enhance ChatGPT’s capabilities, especially in coding tasks.
OpenAI has made several strategic acquisitions in recent years, including the purchase of Rockset, a search and database analytics startup, to improve infrastructure for enterprise products.
