OpenAI to integrate Anthropic's Model Context Protocol across its products, enhancing AI with real-time data access for smarter interactions

OpenAI has announced plans to adopt the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard developed by rival firm Anthropic as reported by TechCrunch. The protocol is designed to help AI models generate more accurate and relevant responses by connecting them directly to real-time data sources.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the news on X, confirming that MCP support will be integrated across OpenAI’s suite of products, including the ChatGPT desktop app. MCP is already available in OpenAI’s Agents SDK, with additional support for the Responses API and desktop version of ChatGPT expected soon.

Altman said, “People love MCP and we are excited to add support across our products. It’s available today in the Agents SDK and support for the ChatGPT desktop app and Responses API is coming soon.”

What is MCP?

TechCrunch states MCP allows AI systems to access live data from businesls tools, content repositories, and development platforms, enabling more intelligent and context-aware interactions. The protocol supports two-way data flows between MCP servers, which expose data, and MCP clients, such as chatbots and AI-powered workflows that consume that data.

Since its release, MCP has been embraced by numerous tech companies including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, which have incorporated the standard into their platforms.

Industry Embraces a Shared Standard

The growing adoption of MCP reflects an industry-wide push to make large language models (LLMs) more useful by enabling seamless integration with the software and data companies already use.

Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger welcomed OpenAI’s adoption of the protocol, posting on X: “Excited to see the MCP love spread to OpenAI – welcome! MCP has become a thriving open standard with thousands of integrations and growing. LLMs are most useful when connecting to the data you already have and software you already use.”

While OpenAI has yet to share a complete roadmap for MCP integration, the company has stated that more details will be released in the coming months.
