Orbital Materials and Civo Join Forces to Advance Carbon Removal in Data Centers
Orbital Materials partners with Civo to test carbon removal technologies at data centers, accelerating sustainable solutions powered by AI for a greener future in cloud computing.

Orbital Materials, a materials development firm using AI, has revealed a strategic partnership with Civo, a cloud computing pioneer, to test carbon removal technologies at Civo's data centers. The project will speed up the creation of environmentally friendly solutions for the data center sector, which is under increasing pressure over its environmental footprint.

The announcement comes after recent worldwide AI policy changes, such as the UK government's AI Opportunities Action Plan, which emphasizes the need for cleaner technologies in high-growth area.

Tackling Data Center Emissions

With data centers accounting for around 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions and potentially contributing up to 2.5 billion tons of CO2-equivalent emissions by 2030 as projected by Morgan Stanley, the need for greener solutions is pressing.

Through this partnership, Civo will deploy Orbital’s carbon capture technology and support the creation of innovative materials and systems aimed at improving sustainability and efficiency across data centers.

Orbital will also gain access to Civo’s facilities to test and refine its carbon removal solutions, with pilot deployments expected at Civo’s UK-based data center by the end of 2025.

Accelerating Innovation with AI-Powered Materials

Jonathan Godwin, CEO and Co-Founder of Orbital, said, “We are excited to partner with Civo to deploy our carbon removal technology for data centers which will help the data center industry transition to a more sustainable future. Our partnership with Civo will accelerate the development of our data center decarbonization and efficiency technologies.”

Orbital has already achieved remarkable progress, reporting a tenfold improvement in the performance of its carbon capture materials, thanks to its AI-driven research platform. This advancement dramatically outpaces traditional materials development timelines.

As part of the agreement, Civo will provide Orbital with a high-performance computing cluster equipped with NVIDIA H200 GPUs, supporting Orbital’s continued AI model training and innovation.

Orbital’s Broader Vision and Momentum

Orbital’s work extends beyond carbon capture. The firm concentrates on speeding up the development of key next-generation materials, such as semiconductors, batteries, and catalysts, which are necessary for next-generation technologies. Developing such materials would normally take decades, but with Orbital's proprietary AI solutions, which have been developed in its R&D facility in Princeton, NJ, this timeline is significantly reduced.

This new collaboration with Civo builds on Orbital’s growing momentum, following recent announcements such as a partnership with Amazon Web Services, funding from NVentures and the release of "Orb," their open-source AI model for material design.
