Pope Leo raised concerns about the challenges posed by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly its potential impact on younger generations, as reported by Reuters.

Speaking at an event attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and parliamentary delegations from 68 countries, the Pope emphasized that AI should be used as a tool for the good of humanity, not to diminish or replace human beings. This message aligns with his broader concerns raised during the early weeks of his papacy.

The Pope’s remarks came as part of the Roman Catholic Jubilee, or Holy Year, and were aimed at addressing the ethical and social implications of rapidly advancing AI technology.

He warned that, while AI proponents argue that it will expedite scientific and technological progress and free people from routine tasks, its impact on society, particularly on younger generations, warrants careful consideration.

AI’s Role in Society and Youth Well-being

In his speech, Pope Leo noted that AI’s "static memory" cannot compare to the "creative, dynamic" memory of humans. He stressed that personal life holds greater value than any algorithm and that social relationships and human development should not be constrained by machine-generated patterns. The Pope’s comments underscore the importance of protecting "healthy, fair, and sound lifestyles," especially for the well-being of younger generations.

Pope Leo's concerns extend beyond the philosophical implications of AI. He has repeatedly highlighted the potential impact of AI on jobs, emphasizing that technological advances must be managed responsibly to avoid exacerbating social inequalities and the risk of job displacement.

International Response to AI’s Development

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to the Pope’s message by reaffirming Italy’s commitment to ensuring that the development of AI remains human-centered. She emphasized that Italy will continue to pursue both national and international efforts to ensure that AI is governed responsibly, with the welfare of humans at its core.
