Royal Marsden Partners with NTT DATA and CARPL.ai to Advance AI in Cancer Research
The Royal Marsden collaborates with NTT DATA and CARPL.ai to implement AI-powered radiology tools, revolutionizing cancer diagnosis and treatment in the NHS.

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, ranked among the world’s top cancer research centers, has partnered with NTT DATA and CARPL.ai to launch an AI-powered radiology analysis service aimed at transforming cancer detection and treatment across the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). The initiative is backed by a three-year grant from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and marks a significant milestone in clinical innovation.

The service, developed on NTT DATA’s robust Dell server-based infrastructure and managed via the CARPL.ai platform, will facilitate research into AI algorithms for diagnosing cancers, including sarcoma, lung, breast, brain, and prostate. These initiatives are anticipated to boost diagnostic precision, speed up treatment, and improve patient outcomes.

AI Infrastructure Built for Clinical Impact

The AI platform supports large-scale medical imaging analysis, enabling researchers at The Royal Marsden and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) to test and monitor algorithm performance over time. This includes real-time tracking, feedback loops, and clinical validation—a critical step for clinical deployment.

Professor Dow-Mu Koh, Consultant Radiologist at The Royal Marsden, said: “We’ve created a scalable research environment that allows us to explore the full potential of AI in a safe and impactful way.”

NTT DATA is also providing AI consulting services, supporting model evaluation in clinical settings and maximizing insight extraction from in-house and commercial tools.

A Model for the NHS’s Digital Future

UK Minister of State for Health Karin Smyth highlighted the project as a model for NHS modernization under the 10-Year Health Plan, citing the role of AI in early detection and improved care. Professor Mike Lewis, NIHR Scientific Director for Innovation, noted: “This project pushes the boundaries of AI in cancer diagnosis and supports NHS staff in delivering better care.”

As the service goes live, Royal Marsden’s research teams will continue evaluating a range of models to shape the future of AI-enabled cancer diagnosis in the NHS.
