Schneider Electric Highlights AI’s Growing Role in US Energy Demand

At the 2025 BloombergNEF (BNEF) Summit, Schneider Electric, a leader in digital transformation for energy management and automation, shared insights into the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on US electricity demand.

In addition to their participation at the summit, Schneider Electric released two new reports highlighting how the rapid expansion of AI could contribute up to 50% of US electricity demand growth by 2030 and the resulting pressures on the nation’s energy infrastructure.

The company also announced its involvement in facilitating over $1.7 billion in clean energy tax credit transfer transactions since late 2023, accelerating investments in resilient and efficient power solutions across the US.

Powering Sustainable AI in the US

As part of the BNEF Summit, Schneider Electric’s Sustainability Research Institute released a new report titled "Powering Sustainable AI in the United States," which delves into the impact of AI's rapid adoption on the country's energy infrastructure.

According to the report, based on findings from the International Energy Agency (IEA), AI is projected to account for 50% of US electricity demand growth by 2030, driven by the widespread adoption of the technology.

The expansion of data centers, expected to increase by 43-92 GW in capacity by 2030, faces significant challenges such as outdated grid interconnection processes, permitting delays, and supply chain bottlenecks.

The report emphasizes the importance of grid modernization to avoid limiting AI innovation and to maintain global competitiveness, warning that failure to act could lead to energy scarcity and system inefficiencies.

The report warns that unchecked AI demand growth could overwhelm the grid, causing a national or regional energy crisis unless major investments are made in flexible, distributed energy solutions.

Aamir Paul, Schneider Electric's President of North America Operations, said, "The rapid and widespread adoption of AI coupled with the soaring demand for electricity are fundamentally reshaping America's energy landscape.”

He added, “With concerted efforts and strategic investments, we can ensure that AI's growth is supported by a robust, efficient, and resilient energy infrastructure, paving the way for greater sustainability."

A survey by AlphaStruxure and Data Center Frontier reveals major energy challenges for US data centers: 44% report grid capacity wait times over 4 years, with 92% citing grid constraints as the top barrier. The Midwest is favored for reliability, the Mountain West for speed, and 60% are considering on-site power to ease delays.
