Tamil Nadu to Deploy AI System in Buses to Alert Drowsy Drivers

The government of Tamil Nadu has decided to introduce Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) worth two crores in approximately 500 public buses. The move is planned to reduce the number of accidents caused by a driver’s inattention and possible fatigue that they may experience while driving buses with multiple passengers on board.

Advanced Technology for Driver Safety
The DMS is said to be rich in technology, as it will include infrared cameras, high-speed image processors, and sensor-based electronic control units (ECUs), which will be used to observe the drivers’ behavior while they are driving the buses. The behaviors that will be assessed might include eyelid movement, gaze, and head tilt. The systems are expected to operate in low-light conditions and detect signs that might indicate drowsiness, intoxication, and any distraction that the driver might experience while driving the buses.
Comprehensive Surveillance for Enhanced Security
Each bus in the fleet is expected to be equipped with a 360-degree camera system, as reported by the state Transport Department. The buses will have four cameras, which will be mounted at each front, rear, and side. The cameras will be installed to provide good coverage of the interior and surrounding traffic. The resolution will help assess complaints that passengers may have and provide the police department with solid evidence for any necessary investigations.
Addressing Maintenance Challenges
The activists have raised several questions. Apart from technology, one issue that may persist is maintenance. It has been reported that several old CCTV cameras under the Nirbhaya fund are non-functional, and there is no provision made to either repair or replace them. Newly introduced buses have been reported to lack pre-installed cameras, raising questions about the sustainability of the move.
