Thales to Supply AI-Powered Mine Detection System to Singapore Navy
Thales’ AI-powered Pathmaster mine detection system will enhance the Singapore Navy’s maritime security using autonomous sonar and data analysis technologies.

Thales secured a significant contract to supply the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) with a cutting-edge Mine Counter Measures (MCM) system, named Pathmaster.

This collaboration with ST Engineering (STE) will see the integration of advanced sonar technology, including M-Cube mission management, TSAS towed sonars, and MiMap sonar data analysis tools, all mounted on STE’s unmanned surface vehicle.

The system aims to boost maritime security in the Straits of Singapore, which is crucial to the region's economic stability due to its key role in global shipping.

AI-Enhanced Mine Detection

In response to the growing complexity and congestion of global seas, the system will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist in detecting and identifying potential threats. This AI integration aims to reduce operator workload and increase efficiency in target detection, with a focus on high accuracy and a low false alarm rate.

Thales Pathmaster solution is known worldwide for its high-end detection capabilities and is already operational in the British Royal Navy and French Navy under the Maritime Mine Countermeasure (MMCM) program.

The Pathmaster system is the first in Asia to be commissioned, a breakthrough for Thales in extending its presence in the defense technologies in the region. In addition, Thales will equip the RSN with tools for managing mine databases and libraries, facilitating efficient continuous operations and future preparedness.

Sébastien Gueremy, VP Underwater Systems, Thales, said, “This latest contract award reflects the trust that the Republic of Singapore Navy places in Thales’ naval technologies. The Pathmaster system represents a significant step in the RSN’s vision for an autonomous system of systems, offering enhanced operational capabilities while reinforcing the safety of their personnel.

He added, “As the first Pathmaster system in the Asian region, Thales strengthens its position as a key supplier to the Navy, addressing the operational needs of the navy in this area. Having successfully delivered multiple radars for major vessel programs in the past, today we are excited to take it a step further to ensure that Singapore stays at the forefront of mine warfare in the region, safeguarding the nation’s maritime routes.”

Support and Future Developments

The system will be supported by the Thales Singapore Defence Hub, where it will undergo maintenance and receive continuous service. Additionally, this hub will facilitate the development of compatible applications that will integrate seamlessly with the RSN’s existing systems, ensuring smooth operational continuity.
