UK Government Reveals AI Factory Antenna Proposal to Increase Collaboration with Europe

The UK government has unveiled plans to open an AI Factory Antenna, a major move by the nation to intensify efforts to develop AI research and applications.
This project, which invites public research institutions to apply for hosting the facility, aims to strengthen the UK's connection to Europe's leading-edge supercomputers, providing access to critical high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities. This capability is essential in order to spur innovation across areas such as healthcare, clean energy, and artificial intelligence technologies.
Collaboration for Global Challenges
The AI Factory Antenna will link British researchers with Europe's cutting-edge supercomputing resources, creating opportunities to tackle global challenges such as climate change and disease.
Through the utilization of HPC capabilities, the UK aims to accelerate the development of cutting-edge AI systems for healthcare, energy, and other critical industries, achieve thereby stimulating economic growth and realizing the goals outlined in the government's Plan for Change.
Minister for AI, Feryal Clark, said, “Supercomputers are the turbo-chargers of discovery. By strengthening our partnership with Europe, we’re giving British innovators the compute power to solve climate and health challenges, grow the economy, and deliver our Plan for Change.”

AI Opportunities Action Plan
This initiative follows the UK-EU agreement secured earlier this month, aimed at fostering stronger ties and boosting economic growth through AI collaboration. The UK government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan includes the ambition to expand international collaboration on compute power, ensuring the country is at the forefront of global AI development.
The UK’s AI Factory Antenna will open up new opportunities for public research organizations, startups, and institutions to utilize Europe’s supercomputing resources. Successful applicants will receive up to €5 million in funding, and, if chosen, will operate as the UK’s gateway to European HPC systems.
This partnership will enable UK-based researchers and businesses to build more complex AI models, accelerating innovation, shortening development cycles, and creating high-skilled jobs across the nation.
The announcement also builds on the UK’s growing investment in AI infrastructure, with £44 billion already invested in data centers since July last year. The upcoming AI Growth Zones, along with the Compute Strategy roadmap due later this year, will further ensure that the UK’s computing capacity keeps pace with the rapidly evolving demands of AI.
