UK Launches AI Energy Council to Drive Sustainable Growth and Clean Power Integration

The UK government has officially convened the inaugural meeting of its newly formed AI Energy Council, co-chaired by the Secretaries for Technology and Energy. The Council aims to align the nation’s drive toward AI innovation with its mission to become a global leader in clean energy, ensuring both objectives fuel economic growth while supporting sustainability.
One of the Council’s priorities will be advising on how renewable and nuclear power sources can better support the growing energy needs of AI and data center infrastructure, especially as AI development scales rapidly. The Council will also focus on improving energy efficiency in these facilities and promoting the safe and secure integration of AI technologies into the country’s energy grid.
Strategic Focus on AI and Power Infrastructure
Unveiled earlier this year as part of the government's AI Opportunities Action Plan, the Council will pool insights from energy experts and tech leaders to tackle the energy demands associated with AI expansion.
The UK's plan involves establishing AI Growth Zones in regions with a minimum of 500MW of power capacity, enough to power approximately two million homes. These zones are anticipated to draw significant private investment and generate thousands of job opportunities.
Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, said, “The work of the AI Energy Council will ensure we aren’t just powering our AI needs to deliver new waves of opportunity in all parts of the country, but can do so in a way which is responsible and sustainable.”
He added, “This requires a broad range of expertise from industry and regulators as we fire up the UK’s economic engine to make it fit for the age of AI - meaning we can deliver the growth which is the beating heart of our Plan for Change.”
Unlocking Energy Capacity for Growth
The government has partnered with Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator to overhaul the UK's energy connection process. Subject to formal approvals, the reforms would free up more than 400GW of capacity, paving the way for key projects, such as large-scale data centres for artificial intelligence.
The Council is made up of 14 leading organisations from the tech and energy sectors, including EDF, National Grid, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), ARM, Scottish Power, Ofgem, and Brookfield. This partnership approach ensures faster grid connections and coordinated progress on energy projects.

Accelerating Clean Power and AI Infrastructure
As part of its Clean Power Action Plan, the government is speeding up the deployment of indigenous clean energy by fast-tracking projects essential to the 2030 energy goals. Accelerated planning permission approvals will guarantee that essential infrastructure such as housing, gigafactories, and data centers receive timely access to the grid, unlocking billions of investments and driving economic growth.
