Wake County Schools to Draft Flexible AI Policy for Classrooms
Wake County Schools plan flexible AI policy to guide classroom use of tools like ChatGPT, balancing innovation and educational integrity.

A new cell phone policy has been formulated by the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS). The leaders have been focusing on the issue that is creating a buzz around the world, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms. A new AI policy is reportedly being developed to reflect the opportunities and challenges posed by AI tools, such as ChatGPT.

A Growing Concern in Modern Education

As stated by the Wake County Superintendent, Dr. Robert Taylor, the Generative AI tools have become increasingly powerful and accessible. He stated, “The opinions vary widely. My personal belief is that we use AI to do things that humans don’t do well. Those things that humans do well, we leave AI out of it.”

He also acknowledged the fact that the tools that were considered to be controversial some years ago are commonly accepted in the classroom nowadays.

Workshops and Drafting a Dynamic Policy

WCPSS has reported that they have conducted four daylong workshops on how to integrate both AI and education. Both AI and Teaching can work well in tandem, but there is a need for a new policy in order to keep pace with the technological advancements.

“We just want to make sure we begin to put those parameters in place and be ready to quickly pivot with any changes that might come after that,” Dr. Robert Taylor said.

A draft version of the policy is said to be presented on June 25 at the school board’s policy committee meeting. The deadline for implementing the policy is not there and a thoughtful approach is expected.
