AI-Powered Traffic Cameras Revolutionizing Road Safety in Abu Dhabi
AI cameras in Abu Dhabi enhance road safety by detecting risky driving behaviors in real-time, shifting from reactive enforcement to proactive public safety.

In Abu Dhabi, artificial intelligence (AI) has been embedded into the city’s traffic monitoring systems, making a significant impact on road safety. Dr. Hamad Khalifa Al Nuaimi, Telecommunications Specialist at Abu Dhabi Police, discussed the transformative effect of AI at the FutureSec Summit 2025. AI-powered cameras are enhancing proactive safety by detecting dangerous driving behaviors, such as tailgating or weaving between lanes, in real-time.

Proactive Safety Measures Through AI Integration

Unlike traditional systems focused on speed monitoring, AI cameras track a wide range of dangerous driving behaviors, including unsafe braking distances and erratic lane changes. These smart interventions allow for the identification and flagging of high-risk drivers before collisions occur. Dr. Al Nuaimi emphasized that the goal is to make roads safer, not simply issue fines, thus reflecting a shift from reactive policing to proactive public safety.

The Broader Vision: Redefining Critical Systems for Public Safety

Dr. Al Nuaimi also highlighted a broader shift in how authorities define critical systems. Traditionally thought to be limited to protected data centres and IT networks, these systems now include public-facing platforms embedded in daily life, like those on highways and city intersections. This shift in focus reflects the UAE's larger strategy to ensure public safety through integrated smart city technology and cybersecurity, with the aim of building resilient systems capable of adapting to emerging threats, such as AI-generated attacks and quantum computing.
