AI Video Startup Runway Raises $308 Million to Grow New Media Businesses
Runway, a video creation platform powered by AI, revealed that it raised $308 million in its recent funding round as reported by Reuters. The round was led by private equity firm General Atlantic and is meant to drive the company's growth in new media technologies.
While Runway didn't publicly confirm its post-funding valuation, sources familiar with the matter said the New York startup is now worth more than $3 billion.
Accelerating AI Research for Creative Applications
With this new capital infusion, Runway plans to push forward its AI research, particularly focusing on enhancing its AI-powered film and animation studio. Central to this development is the use of world simulators, AI systems capable of constructing internal models of environments to predict and simulate events within those virtual spaces.
The funding will allow Runway to advance these technologies and transform the way films and animations are created using artificial intelligence.
High-Profile Backers Join the Round
The funding round attracted involvement from some well-known investors such as SoftBank Group, Nvidia, Fidelity Management & Research Company, and Baillie Gifford. These investors bring substantial experience and resources to assist Runway in scaling its ambitions within the AI media ecosystem.

Building Out Industry Partnerships
Runway, known for its tools that let users generate videos from text prompts or images, continues to deepen its industry ties. According to Reuters, in September of last year, the company joined forces with Lionsgate to build a bespoke AI video generation model.
This is aimed at enabling filmmakers, directors, and creative professionals by making their storytelling stronger through AI-facilitated tools.
