Inaugural AI Energy Council Meeting Sets Vision for UK’s Energy-AI Future

Leaders from the UK’s energy and technology sectors gathered in Westminster for the first meeting of the newly formed AI Energy Council.
The council unites major industry stakeholders like EDF, National Grid, Scottish Power, and Ofgem, along with tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and ARM. They come together to discuss how artificial intelligence can aid the country's clean energy transition while improving digital infrastructure.
Government supports energy and AI integration
The session was chaired by Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle and Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband. The session was about readying the UK's energy system to handle the increasing needs of AI-based computing and data centers. Miliband stressed that AI will enable the UK to scale clean electricity and meet long-term energy objectives.

Members discussed five key priority areas for the next year. These are preparing the energy system to enable AI development, supporting renewable energy in powering digital infrastructure, and ensuring AI technologies are deployed responsibly and securely. The council also wants to help the transition to net zero through promoting innovation and advising on environmentally sustainable AI development.
Aligning innovation with sustainability
With AI technologies rapidly expanding, the council stressed the need to build secure and scalable energy networks that can handle increasing digital demand. AI can help optimize grid performance, improve fault detection, and boost efficiency across the energy system.
This new council represents a step toward aligning national energy priorities with the digital economy. As part of the UK’s broader Plan for Change, it seeks to ensure that communities and businesses can benefit from clean, intelligent energy solutions powered by advanced technology.
