NVIDIA and Oregon Partner to Advance AI Workforce Training

NVIDIA partnered with the State of Oregon to launch a first-of-its-kind effort aimed at getting ready for the future of work dominated by AI. The collaboration, supported by an investment of $10 million, is aimed at empowering Oregonians with the abilities required to prosper in the growing artificial intelligence economy. The alliance will fuel growth, innovation, and healthy competition in the economy of the state.

Governor Tina Kotek announced at the Northwest Breakfast Forum, sponsored by SEMI, a trade association for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. She spoke about the revolutionary effect of AI on sectors and everyday life, having faith that this new effort will position Oregon more effectively to assist workers, businesses, and public services in the future.

AI as a Catalyst for Workforce Development

Louis Stewart, NVIDIA’s Head of Strategic Initiatives, emphasized that AI is central to what he calls a "new industrial revolution." He noted that this collaboration would equip Oregon with the tools to upskill its workforce.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NVIDIA and Oregon establishes a framework to promote AI-focused education, entrepreneurship, and skill-building. It also aims to help state agencies explore ways to apply AI to improve government services ethically and effectively.

This partnership goes beyond formal agreements, with NVIDIA’s investment signaling a commitment to making AI a key driver of Oregon's economic growth.

AI Ambassador Program to Boost Local Education

A key aspect of the initiative is the AI Ambassador Programme. It is a collaborative effort between the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) and Oregon universities. AI ambassadors, trained through the program, will provide on campus AI training and mentoring to Oregon students, providing them with hands-on experience in the fast-growing industry. The program will be developed under the direction of a steering committee composed of state and industry partners.

HECC Director Ben Cannon welcomed the partnership, stating that it would position Oregon's postsecondary institutions on the forefront of AI innovation.

In addition to the MOU, Governor Kotek has allocated $10 million of the Oregon CHIPS Act to the state Semiconductor Talent Sustaining Fund. This fund will assist in making more opportunities available for Oregonians, particularly those from underrepresented communities, to pursue AI and semiconductor fields.

Oregon’s Path to a Smarter, More Competitive Future

The partnership with NVIDIA aligns with Oregon's broader strategy to lead in green tech and innovation. With a strong solar and wind energy foundation, the state is positioning itself at the forefront of sectors that will define the future, including AI.
