PETRONAS Leverages AI and Automation to Boost Sustainability Goals

PETRONAS, Malaysia’s largest international oil and gas company, is harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and the industrialised Internet of things (IoT) technology in a move to reduce emissions as well as support environmental sustainability mandates. The oil major’s pivot towards less carbon-intensive operations is part of a wider objective to support the energy transition while keeping the business resilient.
Building Global Alliances
In Nov 2022, PETRONAS inaugurated their AI Centre of Excellence (CoE) to drive this transformation. The CoE fast-tracks the development and implementation of AI solutions across several areas of its operations. PETRONAS is partnering to co-create and potentially commercialize AI solutions with global innovators, including Baker Hughes, Microsoft and Boston Consulting Group. Current studies of these anticipated joint projects represent a mutual research and development of innovative energy solutions.
PETRONAS has also inked a memorandum of understanding with Abu Dhabi tech firm AIQ and Thailand’s national technology business to cement their efforts in AI development in August 2023. The collaboration aims at exchanging expertise and jointly developing AI-based energy solutions in line with the sustainability objectives of both companies. Leveraging global knowledge, PETRONAS is poised to be a leading adopter of intelligent, scalable technologies.

AI Applications in Operations
STELLAR, developed by PETRONAS is an AI model that captures and replicates the insights of experienced engineers to provide real-time operational recommendations. This allows plant operators to respond quickly and effectively to changes, improving efficiency and safety. The ARIES suite, is another innovation, which utilizes machine learning to optimize plant data and provide measurable value by predicting maintenance needs and streamlining energy use.
PETRONAS envision the integration of AI and automation with its core business and astronomic cuts in its carbon footprint. The company is also establishing a standard for energy companies around the world. In a volatile energy environment, PETRONAS’s AI-enabled sustainability approach is a blueprint of how traditional industries can transition to a cleaner, more intelligent future.
