Talen & Amazon Expand Nuclear Power for AI and Sustainability
Talen Energy’s Susquehanna nuclear plant powers Amazon’s AI data centers, supporting sustainability and economic growth in Pennsylvania through 2042.

Talen Energy has announced the expansion of its nuclear energy relationship with Amazon through a new power purchase agreement (PPA).

This agreement will provide carbon-free energy from Talen’s Susquehanna nuclear plantto support Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in Pennsylvania, focusing on powering AI and other cloud technologies.

The new agreement will see Talen Energy supply 1,920 megawatts of nuclear power to Amazon through 2042, with the full capacity expected by 2032. This partnership comes amid the growing demand for clean, scalable energy to support AI and cloud services, enabling AI-driven innovation for Amazon while reducing carbon emissions.

Talen Energy’s role will be integral to Amazon’s sustainability goals, as the nuclear power provided by Susquehanna will help Amazon lower its environmental impact, aligning with both Pennsylvania’s and Amazon’s net-zero ambitions.

The energy supplied will contribute to Amazon's $20 billion investment in Pennsylvania, supporting the establishment of AI Growth Zones and creating 1,250 high-skilled jobs.

A Strategic Move for Pennsylvania’s Future

This expanded partnership will support Pennsylvania’s energy future, bolstering the state’s role as an energy exporter.

The project also promises to provide construction jobs and ensure the Susquehanna plant continues to generate clean energy for local communities. Pennsylvania's Governor Josh Shapiro welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing that it would foster economic development and strengthen the state's energy security.

The transition to a “front-of-the-meter” arrangement for energy delivery is set to occur in 2026 when transmission reconfigurations are completed, enabling Amazon to receive power directly from Susquehanna.

Talen and Amazon’s Long-Term Vision

Mac McFarland, CEO of Talen Energy, said, “Our agreement with Amazon is designed to provide us with a long-term, steady source of revenue and greater balance sheet flexibility through contracted revenues. We remain a first mover in this space and intend to continue to execute on our data center strategy.”

He added, “Talen is well-positioned to support Amazon’s energy needs as it invests further in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”
