Thane Rolls Out AI-Powered Smart ST Buses
Thane launches AI-powered smart ST buses with ADAS, 360° surveillance, and Wi-Fi for safer, smarter public transport.

Thane, a city in Maharashtra, has taken a step towards an AI-powered transportation system by launching AI-powered Smart State Transport buses. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is said to be the lead agency in the initiative, which aims to enhance commuter safety, convenience, and driver safety.

Advanced Safety Features with AI Integration

The newly introduced initiative is initially expected to run on the Thane-Nagpur route. The innovations that have been promised for now are the real-time driver monitoring system, which detects fatigue or distraction. GPS tracking is available for route accuracy, and emergencies can be tackled using the fire suppression system, which is a foam-based system. Each bus is well equipped with four CCTV cameras for 360-degree surveillance, reinforcing passenger security.

ADAS and 360-Degree Visibility

As reported by Urban Acres, one of the features that sets the initiative apart is the inclusion of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The ADAS is equipped with blind spot cameras and AI-enabled sensors that support safer driving by alerting drivers about nearby obstacles and enhancing their visibility. The system helps in reducing accidents caused by human error.

Passenger Comfort and Connectivity

With safety in mind, smart buses prioritize the passengers' comfort. Therefore, Wi-Fi connectivity is enabled inside the buses, including GPS updates and LED screens providing travel information. A public announcement system has also been installed to help them stay informed about updates during their journey.

A Special Focus on Women and Rural Commuters

The initiative works in tandem with MSRTC’s overall aim to help the women riders commute from one place to another. The bus offers comfortable travel options for long distances in a secure environment.

Support from State Leadership and Future plans

The initiative was backed by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who described the move as a supporting one to deliver a "five-star" public transport experience. The rolling out of the buses is scheduled for five more routes, where passengers can book their tickets using the official MSRTC website or at local reservation counters.
